Ms. Halima Florence, a resident of Joppa village in the Central Equatoria state of South Sudan, epitomizes resilience and transformation. Her family, including her husband and five children, migrated to Joppa in search of a better life. Yet, extreme poverty marked their early days. Her husband, a daily wage worker, struggled to find consistent employment, and Halima’s small condiment business barely sustained the family. Meeting basic needs, let alone securing education for their children, seemed impossible.
Amid these challenges, a neighbor introduced Halima to the Sava Sava Farmers’ Association, a group facilitated by the SDMIC organization. Initially hesitant due to her limited means for savings, Halima decided to join after attending a few meetings. These sessions inspired her and instilled hope for a brighter future. She even encouraged her husband to participate.
Through the association’s savings and lending program, Halima secured her first loan of 150,000 SSP (approximately $83) and started selling vegetables at Gudele II market. Her determination paid off, and with the proceeds, she expanded her business. She borrowed 200,000 SSP ($111) in a subsequent loan cycle and began selling dried smoked fish alongside vegetables in larger quantities.
Halima’s enterprise grew steadily, and her income surged to an average of 12,000–18,000 SSP per day. This success enabled her to employ two workers and achieve financial independence. The highlight of her journey was purchasing a plot of land in Joppa, where she plans to build a home for her family.
In Halima’s words, “I am thankful to SDMIC and Caritas Germany for enabling me to break free from extreme poverty and embark on a journey of empowerment.”
Her story underscores the transformative power of community-based savings and lending programs. By leveraging small loans and financial training, Halima turned her family’s dire situation into one of hope and stability. Her achievements have not only uplifted her household but also inspired others in her community to pursue financial independence and resilience.
