In 2022, DMI initiated its socio-pastoral programs for empowering children, youth, and communities in Kenya. Limited access to quality education in Kenya hinders economic growth and fuels high unemployment, particularly among youth. Barriers like inadequate infrastructure, untrained teachers, and financial constraints prevent many from gaining essential skills, trapping communities in poverty and reducing job opportunities. Addressing these issues is key to sustainable development.
Target Group
The target groups for our programs are street children, children affected by HIV/AIDS, children who are orphaned, school dropouts, and marginalized rural poor community members.
Major Programs
DMI offers three major programs in Kenya:
- Education Support for the street children in Buru Buru
- Pre and Primary education for the poor children in Eldoret
- Technical Institution for the youth in Buru Buru
Education support for the Street Children:
DMI contracted with SOS to run formal school and technical schools for empowering the children and youth equipped with knowledge and skills to have a dignified life. Through this program, street children access their formal education and they grow in family atmosphere with love, respect, and security, and helping them shape their futures. Currently, 125 street children access formal education in the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School in Kenya.
Formal education for the poor children
DMI is running two schools (St. Joseph International Science School (kindergarten & primary) for marginalized poor children in Buru Buru and Eldoret locations in Kenya. Over 650 children are enrolled in nursery and primary education programs in Buru Buru and in Eldoret. There are 53 experienced and qualified teaching and non-teaching staff employed to provide quality education and care for the children and maintain a positive school environment.
Technical Skills for the underprivileged Youths:
DMI’ technical training institute (TTI) creates job employable opportunities through four vocational training namely electrical, computer, fashion design, food and beverage skills for underprivileged youth. Currently, 105 youths have access to our TTI and are equipped with their respective technical skills for their better future. So far, over 250 youths were trained and have found jobs with decent incomes.
In this way, DMI is creating a better quality of life for the children and youths through general and technical education in Kenya. We thank our father founder for his blessings and guidance, Superior General, Mission Director and provincials for their strategic directions and guidance to implement the activities as per the plan and achieve the productive results. We thank our dedicated team members for their dedication, compassion, and service as the source of transformation of the lives of the poor and needy children and youth in Kenya.
