Ms. Margaret Gebai’s inspiring journey from a humble beginning to becoming a beacon of hope for women in Papua New Guinea exemplifies resilience, faith, and commitment to empowerment.

Margaret’s story began as an office tea girl. Despite lacking formal qualifications, her unwavering determination and faith in God propelled her forward. She rose to become a Child Rights Project Officer in the Central Province, working in the remotest areas to advocate for children’s rights. Margaret attributes her progress not to credentials but to divine guidance, likening her journey to the biblical story of Joseph.

In 2017, after resigning from her role as a GBV Project Coordinator at ChildFund PNG, Margaret faced a four-year period of unemployment. During this time, she refused to abandon her dream of empowering women. In 2018, she ran for a seat in the Motu Koita Pari Taoata elections, competing against male candidates and standing as one of only three female contestants. Though she lost, Margaret’s resolve was unshaken. “I knelt on my knees and challenged my God,” she recalls. “If this is not for me, then what is? Show me.”

Her prayers were answered in 2019 when the DMI Sisters approached her community. Margaret, an Adventist, initially struggled with criticism from her church for collaborating with a Catholic organization. However, her faith and belief in unity over division prevailed. She became a devoted volunteer for the DMI Sisters, assisting with their women’s empowerment initiatives.

Margaret’s work with the DMI Sisters involves supporting their grassroots programs, which address issues in settlements and villages. These programs have fostered significant positive changes, despite challenges. Margaret has embraced her role wholeheartedly, helping with reports, attending meetings with stakeholders, and providing hands-on support at the convent. Her husband also volunteers alongside her, reflecting their shared commitment to community service.

Through prayer and dedication, Margaret has overcome adversities and remained steadfast in her mission. She acknowledges the transformative impact of the DMI Sisters, saying, “God is working powerfully through these sisters, and I am honored to be working with them.”

Margaret’s journey underscores the power of perseverance, faith, and collaboration. Her story inspires others to rise above challenges and work towards a shared vision of empowerment and change.
